Jewellery Market Index

Diamond Market

Rough diamond production volume, trade value, and unit value per carat — from Kimberley Process certified statistics. Not a retail price index.

Important: These figures reflect certified rough-diamond production and trade values (Kimberley Process). They are not a retail diamond price index. Retail prices depend on cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight, which are not captured here.

Methodology & Sources

How Diamond Data Is Collected

What This Measures

Diamond production data comes from the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) — a multilateral framework that certifies rough diamonds as conflict-free. Participating countries submit annual production reports covering volume (carats) and declared value (USD). The unit value per carat is derived by dividing total declared value by total carats produced. This is a government-declared production value, not a market price.

Formula

Unit Value = Total Declared Value (USD) ÷ Total Production Volume (carats)

Base Year

2019

Index value = 100 in this year

Update Frequency

Annual. Kimberley Process statistics are published approximately 12–18 months after the reference year.

Data Sources

Kimberley Process Certification Scheme

Annual rough diamond production and trade statistics from participating countries. Data is self-reported by governments and covers rough diamonds only.

UN Comtrade (HS 7102)

UN trade statistics for HS chapter 7102 (diamonds, whether or not worked). Covers both rough and worked diamonds.

Notes

  • • Kimberley Process covers only rough diamonds that cross international borders. Artisanal and alluvial production may be underreported.
  • • Declared production value is set by the exporting country and may differ from market transaction prices.
  • • Synthetic diamond production is not included in Kimberley Process statistics.
  • • Country rankings show the latest year for which complete data is available.
