Jewellery Market Index
Gemstone Market
Coloured gemstone trade value trends from UN Comtrade HS 7103 data. This is a trade-value index, not a gemstone price index.
Important: This page shows the declared trade value of gemstone shipments (HS 7103) reported to UN Comtrade. It is not a gemstone price index. Proprietary price indexes such as GemGuide and IDEX cannot be reproduced here. Individual gemstone prices depend on species, origin, clarity, colour saturation, and treatment disclosure — none of which are captured in aggregate trade statistics.

Methodology & Sources
How Gemstone Trade Data Is Collected
What This Measures
Trade value figures are sourced from UN Comtrade — the official United Nations database of international merchandise trade statistics. Values represent the declared customs value of goods crossing borders, reported by importing and exporting countries. Coverage and accuracy depend on national customs reporting; some countries report late or incompletely.
Formula
Index Value = (Annual Trade Value ÷ 2019 Annual Trade Value) × 100
Base Year
2019
Index value = 100 in this year
Update Frequency
Annual data: typically available 6–12 months after year end. Monthly data where available: 3–4 months lag.
Data Sources
Official UN trade statistics database. HS 7103 covers precious and semi-precious stones; HS 7104 covers synthetic and reconstructed stones.
Notes
- • Trade values are declared customs values. Actual transaction prices may differ due to transfer pricing, insurance, and freight terms.
- • Not all countries report to UN Comtrade; global totals may understate true trade volumes.
- • HS classification revision in 2022 may affect comparability of long time series.
- • This is a trade-value index, not a gemstone price index. It does not track individual stone prices.
