Coverage & Reporting
Understanding the Data
HS 7113 — Articles of Jewellery
Covers finished jewellery and parts thereof, of precious metal or rolled precious metal. The largest single jewellery trade category in Comtrade.
HS 7102 — Diamonds
Covers diamond trade including sorted, worked, and industrial diamonds. Included here as diamonds are a key input and trading commodity for the jewellery industry.
Coverage Gaps
Not all countries report to Comtrade consistently. Free-trade-zone re-exports and informal trade may not be captured. Global totals should be treated as estimates.

Methodology & Sources
How Jewellery Trade Data Is Collected
What This Measures
Jewellery trade statistics are drawn from UN Comtrade, the world's largest database of international merchandise trade. Values represent customs-declared trade, aggregated globally. The HS 7113 series covers finished articles of jewellery and parts; HS 7102 covers diamonds. Both series are stored in USD using the declared trade value at time of export/import.
Formula
Index Value = (Annual Trade Value ÷ 2019 Annual Trade Value) × 100
Base Year
2019
Index value = 100 in this year
Update Frequency
Annual data: typically 6–18 months after reference year. Monthly data (where available): 3–4 months lag.
Data Sources
Official UN database of merchandise trade. HS 7113 covers finished jewellery; HS 7102 covers diamonds.
Harmonised System nomenclature reference for HS chapter 71 (natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones, precious metals, etc.).
Notes
- • HS 7113 includes both gold/silver/platinum jewellery and base-metal jewellery plated with precious metal.
- • Diamond trade (HS 7102) includes rough, sorted, worked, and industrial diamonds — not only gem-quality stones.
- • Some major jewellery trading hubs (UAE, Hong Kong) record significant re-export volumes that inflate bilateral totals.
- • This is a trade-flow index, not a consumer price or retail value index.
