How We Calculate Precious Metal Data
What This Measures
Gold spot price is sourced from Gold-API (real-time XAU/USD). Monthly gold, silver, and platinum prices come from the World Bank Pink Sheet commodity dataset — one of the most authoritative public sources for long-term precious metal price history. All values are in USD; currency conversion uses daily ECB reference rates stored in our database.

Update Frequency
Gold spot: up to hourly. Monthly averages: updated by World Bank typically within 15 days of each month end.
Data Sources
Live gold spot price (XAU/USD). Updated every few minutes during market hours.
Monthly gold, silver, and platinum USD prices. Historical series begins 1960. Published under the World Bank Open License.
Daily reference exchange rates used to convert USD values to your selected display currency.
Notes
- • Spot price and monthly averages are different series: spot reflects the current interbank price; the monthly series is the arithmetic mean of daily fixes within the month.
- • Index mode resets all series to 100 in 2019, making relative performance comparable across metals regardless of nominal price differences.
- • Stale threshold: Gold-API 60 minutes · World Bank 45 days · ECB 3 business days.
